Frequently asked questions
What is the application process? If you contact us, our membership secretary will help you find a course which you will feel comfortable with and enjoy. As our room size is limited to eight students some classes may be full, but we will try to fit you to a class that best suits you. Please give us as much information as possible when you apply.
Are there other ways to pay class fees if I am unable to use the online store? We are able to offer payment by card machine as well as traditional methods if you are unable to access the online payment system. Please enquire through the membership secretary so we can make these arrangements with you.
Do you need any prior experience? For most classes experience is not required. Some classes are more geared towards those with less experience, and are a better introduction for those who want to try out Art classes and then progress when they have more knowledge or confidence. Classes are small and tutors are able to offer guidance tailored to the abilities of each student.
Do you have to live in the Barbican Estate? We welcome residents from the local area, including the Golden Lane Estate, City of London and neighbouring boroughs. Our evening classes may suit those working in the city.
Travelling from Outer London Boroughs: Since the opening of the Elizabeth line we have noticed more students coming from further afield, particularly for workshop days. The Barbican area is served by good transport links including from Moorgate station where there is a new high level pedestrian link (adjacent the Metro Bank) via escalators into the Barbican Estate, then follow map and directions below.
Finding the Art Room
Detail from the City of London - Hidden City Walking Map https://cdn.activecitynetwork.com/uploads/images/walking-map.pdf?v=1529320264
Use Stairs or Lifts as shown on the map to get from street level onto the pedestrian Highwalks (shown in pink). The Art Room is located below Andrewes House and close to the junction with Willoughby House. From Podium level (Highwalk) go via a gate and down the stairs to Level -1 (adjacent Barbican Playgroup) as shown by black arrow on map.
Health and Safety (update)
During the 2020 Covid pandemic arrangements were put in place to facilitate social distancing in the Art Room. We also complied with government requirements for operating adult education classes. We retained many of these measures during 2021 and 2022 as our students felt comfortable with these arrangements. Class sizes were a maximum of 8 students. The room is cleaned regularly. Good ventilation is encouraged and sanitising gel and cleaning materials are provided. Risk Assessments are available in the Art Room Safety File.
In 2024 we maintain our general procedures for a safe hygienic environment. Please help to keep the room as you find it. The Trustees welcome suggestions for any improvements to the facilities in the Art Room. We have recently improved the lighting with LED fittings.
